Pentecost

May 19, 2024

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4 ESV

On this Sabbath we celebrate Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit coming to indwell in the hearts of Believers. Even unto our hearts today.

At that first Pentecost, the Apostle Peter spoke with amazing clarity about what had just happened. And he easily responded to questions from those who heard his message, “What shall we do?” Peter’s answer, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you, too, will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:37b-38, adapted.

Pentecost reminds us that we are co-heirs with Christ, called to take up our cross that we may also be glorified with Him. This most pivotal Pentecost, the one following Jesus’ crucifixion, resurrection and ascension, empowered the early Believers to begin to act on the Great Commission (Note 1). After the coming of the Holy Spirit, the disciples and their inner circle did not stay in that room. They burst out to tell the world about God’s glory:

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common.” Acts 2:42-44 ESV

And thus, the Church began. And thus it continues.

Note 1: The Great Commission was given by Jesus to the disciples, and by extension to all Christians. “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 NLT
