Recently, we were roundly criticized for telling a friend who was struggling with one of life’s seemingly intractable problems, “The trouble with life is knowing which bridges to cross and which bridges to burn” (David Russell) [Paraphrased].
Having now sufficiently recovered from the rebuke, we offer this clarifying edit: Knowing which bridge to cross and which to burn is among the hardest things in life, where burning a bridge is a metaphor for recognizing the end of a season and moving on. Followed by the problem of whether the burning should be figurative or literal.
We have nothing more to say on the matter.
With thanks to Quotation Celebration where you will find additional exposition on this truism.
