But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. Exodus 20:10 ESV
The act of keeping the Sabbath, of following the Fourth Commandment, is a fast, not from food, but from worldly things. We abstain from our ordinary work. We turn off the phone and the computer in order to silence their constant demands for our attention. A fast to draw closer to our Maker. To bring honor and glory to His majesty.
The Sabbath is God’s provision for man. Practicing the Sabbath introduces a different rhythm into our lives; a holy, God-centered, rhythm. It renews us. It reminds us that we are entirely dependent on Him. And that we are interconnected with each other in that dependence.
The Application: No email. No telephone. No work. Bring all praise and glory and honor to God through our Sabbath fast.
